Plastic paradise: Ibiza’s 1971 ICSID congress

Abstract

This article discusses the use of plastic at the annual meeting of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), held in Ibiza in 1971. It focuses on the pneumatic sculptures of Josep Ponsatí and the inflated architecture of José Miguel Prada Poole, whose maquettes are today catalogued in museums as sculptures. The congress took place in the Sant Miquel cove during Franco’s dictatorship and exemplifies how plastic was understood under those specific social and political conditions, and how it was used on an island that embodied traditional Mediterranean culture, albeit dramatically transformed by tourism. The article also reveals the links established between this ICSID gathering and the plastics industry: Aiscondel, the factory that provided the materials for some of the sculptures, used documentary images taken at the festival in aggressive publicity campaigns in subsequent years. In adopting this focus, the article aims to show how the imagery of plastic has evolved in recent decades from the utopian vision prevalent at the time to its current association with a dystopian Anthropocene.

Este artículo analiza el uso del plástico en el Consejo Internacional de Sociedades de Diseño Industrial (ICSID), celebrada en Ibiza en 1971. Se centra en las esculturas neumáticas de Josep Ponsatí y la arquitectura neumática de José Miguel Prada Poole, cuyas maquetas están hoy catalogadas en museos como esculturas. El congreso tuvo lugar en la cala de Sant Miquel durante la dictadura franquista y ejemplifica cómo se entendía el plástico en aquellas condiciones sociales y políticas concretas, y cómo se utilizaba en una isla que encarnaba la cultura mediterránea tradicional, aunque dramáticamente transformada por el turismo. El artículo también revela los vínculos establecidos entre esta reunión del ICSID y la industria del plástico: Aiscondel, la fábrica que proporcionó los materiales para algunas de las esculturas, utilizó imágenes documentales tomadas en el festival en agresivas campañas publicitarias en años posteriores. Al adoptar este enfoque, el artículo pretende mostrar cómo el imaginario del plástico ha evolucionado en las últimas décadas desde la visión utópica imperante en la época hasta su actual asociación con un Antropoceno distópico.
