Los asesinos de la luna: la dignidad de los Osage

Abstract

Después de una larga carrera cinematográfica nadie duda que a Martin Scorsese les gusta retarse a sí mismo (“A mi edad, ¿qué otra cosa puedo hacer sino arriesgarme?”, ha declarado). Su último estreno en España, Los asesinos de la luna, tiene como mayor riesgo una reivindicación inusual: no solo contar una larga historia racial sino también mostrar cómo era la vida de los nativos americanos (los Osage de Oklahoma) antes de que el western los condenase a ser los malos de las películas: cómo eran sus bodas y sus funerales, como se ponía nombre a los bebés y celebraban sus festejos, mostrarlos como lo que fueron, seres humanos con capacidad para empatizar con el espectador de cualquier nacionalidad o raza, aun a costa de que los protagonistas no sean “los blancos” y de que el producto final tenga algo de exótico.

After a long film career, no one doubts that Martin Scorsese likes to challenge himself ("At my age, what else can I do but take risks?" he declared). Its latest release in Spain, The Killers of the Moon, has as its greatest risk an unusual vindication: not only to tell a long racial story but also to show what life was like for the Native Americans (the Osage of Oklahoma) before the western condemned them to be the bad guys in the movies: what they were like their weddings and funerals, how babies were named and celebrated their celebrations, showing them as what they were, human beings with the ability to empathize with the viewer of any nationality or race, even at the cost of the fact that the protagonists are not "the whites" and that the final product has something exotic.
