Los panteones reales del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Muerte, sistemas sepulcrales y construcción de imagen dinástica, (1563-1833)

Abstract

Estudio de la importancia histórica del panteón real y los demás espacios que configuran el monasterio de san Lorenzo de El Escorial, construido a iniciativa de Felipe II entre 1563 y 1584, como lugar de creación y proyección de imagen funeraria de la monarquía de España, durante la Edad Moderna, a partir de la mentalidad ante la muerte de los soberanos españoles, sus consortes y familiares, y el depósito de sus restos mortales en el mismo, cuya custodia era confiada a su comunidad jerónima.

This study analyses the historical significance of the Royal Pantheon and the other rooms that form the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, built on the initiative of Philip II between 1563 and 1584, as a place of historical creation, projection and evolution of funerary image of the Spanish Monarchy, during the Modern Age, taking into consideration the attitude towards the death of the Spanish sovereigns, their spouses and other relatives, and the placing or their mortal remains in the Monastery, whose custody was entrusted to the monks of the Order of St. Jerome.
