Abstract
Evo-devo is a principal research area in present-day evolutionary biology. This introductory chapter characterizes the evo-devo research program, recapitulates its origins, and lays out the purpose and structure of the reference guide. Volume one is dedicated to the key concepts, the history, and the philosophy of evo-devo. Volume two concentrates on selected topics of empirical research in the evo-devo of plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Volume three is focused on the modeling of evo-devo, its relation to population thinking, and further extensions into adjoining disciplines. The sections are arranged in a way that reflects the progression of the field and facilitates the guide’s uses for in-depth study and teaching.
