Abstract
The development of linguistics in the twentieth century, initiated by Saussure, the exchanges between cultures in the post-war period and the development of information technology, logocentrism and postmodernism and the current emergence of images as the most important means of everyday communication and entertainment are the contexts of this study: «Chinese language and Western languages: comparative studies of written representations». There is a visual representation that wishes to make present what is heard, what is pronounced; and then there is another representation that attends to what is said, what is heard, but does not renounce to make present the conceptual image or, better said, the referent itself. The purpose of this work is to analyze these processes, compare them, check the regularity of the phenomena, their internal logic, the way in which necessity conditions expression, what is written and what is drawn. Images are the parents of words and, nevertheless, in history, words seem to have shared the same destiny as Oedipus from the beginning. There was at the same time the combination of writing and image to produce various artistic phenomena that show human ingenuity, and a conflictive relationship as in Magritte's famous work «La trahison des images». The complexity of human nature makes it inevitable that writing and its mastery have been associated with power, social class and lying. Along with Plato's melancholy and Qin Shi Huang's unification policy, the relationship between writing and speech has also shown different paths of development in China and the West...
