C. albicans es un hongo comensal habitual del ser humano que coloniza las mucosas del tracto gastrointestinal y urogenital. No obstante, especialmente en situaciones de inmunosupresión, causa infecciones graves potencialmente mortales cuando se produce un crecimiento descontrolado, y accede al torrente sanguíneo alcanzando órganos vitales. Dado que el intestino es uno de los principales reservorios endógenos desde los que C. albicans puede acceder a la circulación sistémica, comprender los mecanismos que permiten su implantación y persistencia en este nicho es esencial para entender cómo mantiene un estado estable como comensal y qué factores favorecen su virulencia...
C. albicans is a common human commensal fungus that colonizes several mucosal niches, including the gastrointestinal tract. However, it can also cause severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients, where its growth can become dysregulated and lead to bloodstream translocation and tissue invasion.
