Abstract
This study amounts to a survey of atheism as it appeared in 5th century BCE Athens. In contrast to those approaches which could be understood as «histories of atheists», in these pages I want to make my own contribution to the history of atheism from two different standpoints. First, by answering the question about how unbelief is conceptualised in Athens by the end of the 5th century, and how the possibility of not believing in the gods —along with those who opted to manifest as such— was socially considered. Second, I intend to describe what was the state of atheistic discourse at the time, taking into account not only what arguments were available in order to defend the inexistence of the gods, but also from whence these arguments developed, and how they interacted with the different theistic proposals of the day...
