Abstract
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a contributing factor to canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC). (García-de-la-Fuente et al., 2015; Reagan, 2024) Clinical signs associated with Bb infection range from mild upper respiratory tract disease to, in severe cases, signs of systemic illness, including lethargy, inappetence, fever, andproductive cough (Reagan, 2024; Reagan & Sykes, 2020)Data obtained through history, physical examination, laboratory analysis, and imaging tests may increase suspicion of lower respiratory tract disease. However, a definitive etiological diagnosis of Bb requires specific diagnostic tests targeting this pathogen. (Dear, 2020; Lappin et al., 2017; Reagan, 2024; Reagan & Sykes, 2020) The primary objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of Bb detection using PCR and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid culture in a population of dogs suspected of having CIRD. Additionally, the study aims to define the characteristic clinical, radiological, and bronchoscopic patterns of Bb infection, as well as the presence and impact of bacterial coinfections. Finally, it will analyze whether prior antibiotic treatment affects the diagnostic capability of Bb detection through PCR and BALF culture...
