Abstract
Longevity is a remarkable achievement of modern civilizations, but it also brings a number of healthcare challenges. This is partly because longevity has not been accompanied by a proportional window of good health, but instead, it has raised the lifetime risk of disability and dementia. In this context, frailty (a risk factor for disability) and dementia stand out as priority health issues due to their high prevalence and their socioeconomic burden. Frailty is a common geriatric syndrome, definedas a state of increased vulnerability to adverse outcomes, such as falls, impaired mobility, disability, and death. Dementia, on the other hand, is a neurodegenerative syndrome, characterized by a persistent cognitive impairment that interferes with everyday function. To date, frailty and dementia have received very uneven attention in neuroscience and neuroimaging research: while the study of frailty has been somewhat overlooked, a significant body of work has developed around dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD)...
