El monstruo y Diderot: radicalismo ilustrado, antinewtonianismo y desviaciones anatómicas

Abstract

Conforme uno se aproxima a la filosofía y la ciencia del siglo XVIII, uno se sorprende del abundante recurso al tema del monstruo que hicieron pensadores como Maupertuis o Diderot. La sorpresa se hace mayor al comprender que estos filósofos -junto con Buffon- fueron algunos de los más notables exnewtonianos franceses entre 1740 y 1760. Cada uno de los tres hizo diferentes usos del monstruo y entre ellos tuvieron diferencias particulares respecto a la interpretación de la física newtoniana que ganó las llamadas “guerras newtonianans” en el seno de la Academia Real durante la década de 1740. Este trabajo de investigación parte en buena medida de esta cuestión, es decir, de la pregunta acerca de porqué estos tres pensadores ilustrados se plantearon el problema del monstruo casi contemporáneamente; es más, se pretende aclarar la posible relación entre sus formas de antinewtonianismo y el uso y significado del monstruo en sus obras. Consideramos que el análisis de estas cuestiones puede contribuir a arrojar luz sobre la historia del pensamiento científico y filosófico del siglo XVIII...

Approaching the eighteenth century philosophy and science one gets surprised about the massive use of monsters in some 18th century philosophers as Maupertuis and Diderot. The surprise increases as you realize that these philosophers, along with Buffon, were some of the most famous ex-Newtonians in France between 1740 and 1760. Each of them have a particular use of the monster and, also, had public differences with the interpretation of newtonian physics that won the socall “Newtonian wars” in the French Academy circa 1740. This research started asking why this thinkers face the problem of the monster at the same time. In fact this research tryes to clear up the relation between a different grade of antinewtonianism and his uses of monsters.
