Abstract
This research brings together and contextualises for the first time all the available documentary data on master stonemason Juan Guas, with the aim of producing a comprehensive biography and a catalogue raisonné of his works. A comprehensive analysis of the sources clarifies chronologies, evaluates little-studied works and reveals lesser-known aspects of the artist, such as his personal life, his role as workshop manager and his controversial sculptural activity. The study also offers a more accurate view of his style and his contributions to Spanish Gothic art, placing his career in the historical and artistic context of 15th-century Castile. It also demonstrates that Guas not only assimilated the models he learned in the Toledo cathedral workshop with the Cuemans and his father, but also transformed them into his own language, which he passed on to disciples such as the Egas brothers, Juan de Ruesga, Juan de Talavera, Martín de Solórzano and Juan Gil de Hontañón, with whom he consolidated the so-called “Toledo School”. His ability to organise complex workshops, work simultaneously on projects in several cities and interact with both nobles and kings reveals an exceptional personality that transcended the purely artistic sphere...
