Abstract
This research seeks to develop an understanding of the factors that influence the social reintegration of Ponent Penitentiary Center inmates by exploring the perspectives of prisoners themselves. To contextualize this study, the structure and history of the Spanish penitentiary framework will be reviewed alongside the effects that this system has on the treatment and the social reintegration of incarcerated people.Vigorous ethnographic methods have been used to gather inmates’ perceptions, with in-depth and semi-structured interviews being the primary sources of obtaining data. Ensuring that the voices of prisoners themselves are at the centre of this project, 50 recorded interviews have been conducted: 45 at the Ponent Penitentiary Center, 3 in Centre Obert and 2 in Freedom. Furthermore, additional testimonies have been collected to supplement the information shared in these conversations. The data collected has been coded using ATLAS.Ti before being intertwined with theorical discussion in the chapters of this thesis. The analysis of the inmates’ perceptions emphasizes the contrast between the importance of the penitentiary treatment granted by the Catalan policy and the influence perceived in the idiosyncrasy of prison life, with few applications of the prison’s regime.
