Aristóteles utilizaba el término “fantasma” para describir las imágenes mentales, y “fantasía” para describir la facultad por la cual un fantasma se nos representa en la mente. El término “afantasía” fue acuñado por Zeman (2015) para describir la experiencia de las personas que no pueden evocar voluntariamente imágenes mentales visuales. Alrededor del 2 al 5% de la población general es afantásica.
