Abstract
ABSTRACT : This paper is a comparative study about the semantics of three adpositions which are etymologically related. We use the words para (Hittite), pa-ro (Mycenean Greek) and pura (Vedic) to study the evolution of the Indo-European stem *prH2 - from its original local meaning. The morphological reconstruction of this stem is discussed (Adrados, 1975; Dunkel, 2014), but its meaning is clear: "in front of'. Despite of the undiscussed original local meaning, the realizations of the stem in the three selected languages show meaning develops in different ways, and we will revfew such ways. To carry it out, we will work with the notion of Semantic Function according to Crespo proposal (1997). We will display the results using a semantic map (Haspelmath, 2003 and Narrog, 2010), in order to compare the different semantic extensions of *prH2 - in Hittite, Mycenaean Greek and Vedic. To sum up, we will compare our results with the data offered by the Linguistic Typology, because Linguistic Typology has already proved that local markers are very frequently used in other linguistic families to express other and more abstract Semantic Functions (Haspelmath, 1997; Luraghi, 2003; Heine & Kuteva, 2002)
