Abstract
Resilience is the ability to overcome a highly stressful situation. It is a dynamic process that encompasses a positive adaptation in the context of significant adversity. It is tested in a variety of situations, from everyday life events such as the death of a family member, an unwanted pregnancy or the diagnose of a severe illness, to rarer circumstances like natural disasters or wars. This capacity does not come from the avoidance or denial of adversity by the individual, but from a controlled exposure to it, coming out of it reinforced. One of the issues that arouses the most interest in the field of resilience is the set of factors that promote it. Although there is not a large number of high-quality studies in the literature about the subject, some factors that favor resilience have been proposed by several authors. Among them we can find certain personality traits, the social environment or some neurobiological mechanisms. Investigating this set of factors could improve our understanding of why some individuals respond better than others after experiencing an adverse or stressful situation. Promoting resilience through these factors, could lower frustration and anxiety levels in the general population and also could have a positive impact in the health system...
