Del latín al vernáculo: la difusión manuscrita de la obra de Leonardo Bruni en la Castilla del siglo XV

Abstract

Leonardo Bruni forma parte del grupo fundador de la cultura humanística junto a otras figuras de relieve, como Ambrogio Traversari o Niccolò Niccoli, pero más que cualquier otro autor de su tiempo, Bruni tuvo un papel extraordinario y decisivo en la afirmación y en la difusión del Humanismo, al que contribuyó con versiones latinas de clásicos griegos y con numerosas aportaciones originales en las que se establecen los fundamentos teóricos de dicho movimiento cultural. Sus trabajos, traducciones latinas de clásicos griegos y obras originales, gozaron de una circulación y de una penetración sin igual, sea manuscrita o impresa, y en Castilla se leyeron, se tradujeron y se imitaron durante el Cuatrocientos. Frente a lo que se ha venido considerando como práctica habitual entre los traductores castellanos del momento, en el caso de Bruni se puede afirmar que sus obras se vertieron directamente del latín al vernáculo sin tener como intermediaria la lengua italiana.

Leonardo Bruni is one of the most important founders of humanistic culture in the Italian on the “Quattrocento”; there were other important people of this movement as Ambrogio Traversari and Niccolò Niccoli, but Bruni had an extraordinary and decisive role in the consolidation and spreading of Humanism: his translations of ancient Greek authors’ works, his biographical explanations and another original works consolidated the theoretical foundation of Humanism. The work of Bruni, both the original and his translations, was known, read, translated and imitated by the most important contemporary Castilians intellectuals. Eventually, the Bruni’s works were translated from Latin to the vernacular language without the assistance of Italian; so, that is the opposite to the common opinion with respect to the normal way for the Castilian translator in this time.
