La música religiosa de Valentín de Zubiaurre, maestro de la Real Capilla de Madrid (1875-1914)

Abstract

El siglo XIX español fue para la música religiosa un punto de inflexión en lo referente a su producción debido a los avatares sociopolíticos vividos principalmente en la primera mitad del siglo. Por ello, la visión un tanto derrotista sobre el género sacro de esta etapa ha llevado a las narrativas históricas musicales a centrarse, en su mayoría, en la música teatral dejando al margen todo lo referente a la música religiosa. En consecuencia, muchos de estos repertorios, así como sus creadores, siguen esperando ver la luz y ser estudiados. Este es el caso del maestro de la Real Capilla de Madrid, Valentín María de Zubiaurre (1837-1914), cuya obra, guardada en los polvorientos cajones de los archivos, ha permanecido durmiendo el sueño del olvido hasta la actualidad. La labor del compositor al frente de la capilla palatina y fuera de ella dejó un importante corpus musical sacro que ha permanecido ignorado por la musicología. El estudio y recuperación de gran parte de este legado, así como la puesta en valor dela figura de Zubiaurre como compositor clave de la música religiosa de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX vertebran los cuatro capítulos de esta tesis. El maestro tuvo una amplia trayectoria musical, en buena parte aún desconocida, que los diferentes epígrafes del capítulo primero sacan a la luz al poner de relieve los logros y las influencias que tuvo como personaje destacado en los principales círculos musicales españoles. En él se dan a conocer los inicios de su carrera destacando su ingreso como cantor en la capilla de la Iglesia de Santiago de Bilbao con Nicolás Ledesma. The Spanish 19th century was a turning point for religious music in terms of its production due to the socio-political vicissitudes experienced mainly in the first half of the century. As a result, the somewhat defeatist view of the sacred genre of this period has led musical historical narratives to focus, for the most part, on theatrical music, leaving out everything related to religious music. Much of the repertoire and its creators are therefore still waiting to see the light of day and to be studied. This is the case of Valentín María de Zubiaurre (1837-1914), a maestro at the Royal Chapel of Madrid whose work, kept in the dusty drawers of the archives, has remained forgotten until present day. The composer’s work as the head of the Royal Chapeland elsewhere left an important body of sacred music that has been ignored by musicology.The study and recovery of a large part of this legacy, and the significance placed on Zubiaurre as a key composer of religious music in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, form the backbone of the four chapters of this thesis. The maestro had an extensive musical career, still largely unknown, which the various sections of the first chapter bring to light by emphasising his achievementsand influence as a leading figure in the main musical circles in Spain. It describes the beginnings of his career, highlighting his entry as a singer in the chapel of the Church of Santiago de Bilbao with Nicolás Ledesma.
