Technical and historical examination of Virgin surrounded by flowers painting of Jan Van Kessel I

Abstract

The Flemish still-life Virgin Sorrounded by Flowers from Jan Van Kessel I has been submitted to a conservation treatment and technical examination at Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon). The aim of the study was the knowledge of materials, artist's practice and collaboration of artists. Technical analysis illuminates the highlights that the artists follow the rules of St. Luke Guild concerning materials and collaboration of artists. Furthermore historical analyses hightlight the purpose that this kind of paintings had a devotional function.

La naturaleza muerta flamenca Virgen rodeada de flores de Jan Van Kessel I fue sometida a un tratamiento de conservación y exámenes técnicos en el Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisboa). El objetivo del estudio era conocer los materiales, las técnicas y la colaboración de artistas en la obra. Los exámenes técnicos mostraron claramente que los artistas siguieron las reglas del Gremio de San Lucas en cuanto a los materiales y la colaboración de artistas. Además, los análisis históricos desvelaron que la función de este tipo de pinturas era devocional.
