Русалки в Полесье и сирены в античности

Abstract

En este trabajo, comparamos a las "rusalki" del folklore eslavo oriental con las sirenas de la mitología clásica. Nos basamos, en cuanto a las "rusalki", en testimonios recogidos en el siglo XX, procedentes de una vasta comarca, llamada Polesie, que incluye parte del sur de Bielorrusia, norte de Ucrania, suroeste de Rusia y sureste de Polonia. Nuestras fuentes para el estudio de las sirenas vienen dadas por las literaturas y el arte de las antiguas Grecia y Roma. A partir de dichas fuentes, estudiamos el origen, aspecto externo, hábitat y época de aparición, y comportamiento de las "rusalki" y de las sirenas, así como su relación con los seres humanos. Nuestra conclusión es que hay más diferencias que afinidades entre "rusalki" y sirenas; que incluso sus rasgos comunes se asocian de manera diferente en ambos grupos de personajes, y que las "rusalki" son un producto de la imaginación de los pueblos eslavos, independiente de la influencia de la mitología clásica.

In this paper, we compare the "rusalki" of Eastern-Slavic folklore, and the sirens of classical mythology. The basis of our work about the "rusalki" is provided by contemporary evidence gathered in the twentieth century in a large region called "Polesie", which encompasses part of Southern Byelorussia, Northern Ukraine, South-western Russia, and South-Eastern Poland. Our sources for the study of the ancient sirens are those of the art and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. On that basis we have examined the origin, physiognomy, places and time of their appearing, and behaviour of the sirens and of the "rusalki", as well as their relationship with human beings. Our conclusion is that there are more differences than similarities between "rusalki" and sirens; that even their common traits are combined in different ways in each group of imaginary creatures, and that the "rusalki" are a product of the imagination of the Slavic peoples, independent of any influence from classical mythology.
