Abstract
The peace process in El Salvador, following the signing of the Peace Accords in 1992, has been widely celebrated as a milestone in the country's history. However, beyond appearances, this process has been deeply influenced by historical and contemporary power dynamics that have perpetuated structural inequalities. The thesis, entitled The Coloniality of Peace in El Salvador: 1992-2019, proposes a critical analysis of these processes, exploring how colonial structures and foreign interference have conditioned the country's security and development policies. This essay examines the most relevant findings of the research, from the historical context to the fundamental conclusions. The Salvadoran civil war (1980-1992) culminated with the signing of the Peace Accords, an event that put an end to an armed conflict that left more than 75,000 dead and thousands missing. Although the accords promised democracy and development, the policies implemented after 1992 demonstrated that the structural roots of violence were not addressed. The thesis argues that the “coloniality of peace,” the central concept of the study, allows us to understand how the power structures imposed during colonial times and reinforced by neoliberalism have influenced the conceptualization and implementation of peace in the country...
