Abstract
Pío Baroja y Nessi, as a member of the so-called “Generation of 98”, marked with indelible imprints his time in evoking the loss of overseas Spain with different literary genres, thus contributing with new issues and participating in the literary renewal. Among all his works, Camino de Perfección (Pasión mística) stands out as his best novel with the 98 spirit. However, when this pessimistic novel appeared, its sale and diffusion were prevented because of its antireligious and anticlerical themes. In this paper, we will study how the author's pessimism and anticlericalism are treated through the main figure of the novel, Fernando Ossorio
