dc.description.abstractEl objetivo de este trabajo ha sido identificar y describir las iniciales xilográficas existentes en el taller salmantino de Juan de Cánova, que comenzó a funcionar a partir de 1552 y cesó en 1568. La Biblioteca Histórica “Marqués de Valdecilla” cuenta con un buen número de ejemplares salidos de las prensas de este impresor y la consulta de sus fondos ha sido de gran importancia, junto con los de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. El taller de Juan de Cánova contaba con todos los aparejos necesarios para la impresión. Todos ellos los encontramos bien descritos en el testamento del impresor, incluso aquellos con los que se ornamentaban los libros guardados en el “cajón de las ystorias”. Los abecedarios o iniciales xilográficas formaban diversas colecciones según el tamaño y la ornamentación reflejada en ellos. Su gran diversidad nos ha llevado a observar que estos abecedarios tenían un largo recorrido. En ocasiones pertenecieron anteriormente a otros impresores e, incluso, posteriormente, tras el cierre del taller de los Cánova, prolongaron su vida en otros establecimientos tipográficos.
dc.description.abstractThe objective of this work has been to identify and describe the xylographic initials existing in the Salamanca workshop of Juan de Cánova, which began to work since 1552 and ceased in 1568. The Historical Library "Marqués de Valdecilla" has a good number of copies come out of the presses of this printer and the research of its funds has been of great importance, together with those of the National Library in Madrid. The printing office of Juan de Cánova had all the necessary equipment for printing. All of them are well described in the printer’s testament, even those with which the books kept in the "cajón de las ystorias" were decorated. The abecedarios or xylographic initials formed diverse collections according to the size and the ornamentation reflected in them. Its great diversity has led us to observe that these abbreviations had a long way. Sometimes they previously belonged to other printers and, even later, after the closing of the Cánova’s printing office, they extended their life in other typographical offices.
