Abstract
Durante los últimos cincuenta años las ideas que tenía la sociedad sobre la naturaleza de la vida han cambiado drásticamente a través de la ciencia y la tecnología. Los avances revolucionarios en genética, biología molecular o ciencia computacional, han proporcionado nuevos conocimientos en relación a los procesos, complejidades y abstracciones de los sistemas vivos, y la aparición de los ordenadores e internet, ha llevado a nuevas formas de comunicación y conexión entre seres humanos. Esto, unido a la aparición de corrientes artísticas alternativas, basadas en las filosofías de software libre y código abierto, apoyadas en la libertad de acceso, la colaboración entre comunidades de usuarios y la libre distribución del código fuente, ha llevado a plantearse un nuevo paradigma en la representación de lo vivo. El objeto de esta investigación se centra en el estudio de la vida artificial a través de una creación artística democrática, poniendo especial atención a las obras de software libre y código abierto presentes en el Certamen Arte y Vida Artificial de Fundación Telefónica durante sus quince años de existencia.
During the last fifty years the ideas that society had on the nature of life have changed drastically through science and technology. Revolutionary advances in genetics, molecular biology, or computational science, have provided new insights into the processes, complexities and abstractions of living systems, and the emergence of computers and the Internet has led to new ways of communication and connection between human beings. This, coupled with the emergence of alternative artistic currents, based on free software and open source philosophies, supported by freedom of access, collaboration between user communities and free distribution of source code, has led to a new paradigm in the representation of the living. The objective of this research is to study the artificial life through a democratic artistic creation, paying special attention to the free software and open source works present in the “Certámen Arte y Vida Artificial de Fundación Telefónica” during its fifteen years of existence.
