Abstract
ABSTRACT: The work of Flemish poet Sacha Blé (Sleidinge, 1971) comprises five volumes published between 2003 and 2016. His poems reflect a search for what is lacking in space and time, and also for what is lacking within him. While the desire for the foreign stands out throughout his poetry, what really distinguishes "Tijdens het ontbijt" (2007) – the volume on which this chapter focuses – from his other works is that it was actually written abroad. On the one hand, the analysis concerns the extent to which the foreigner plays the central role and the ways in which this is rendered in Blé’s poetry. At the same time, attention is paid to how the tone, the sound and the language used in the volume correspond to the Mediterranean setting. Ble’s poetry is read from the perspective of a reader who feels attracted by a specific type of nature, and by some very typical words, colours and smells, which are recognised as familiar. The chapter builds on the approach developed by Riffaterre, which emphasises the role of the reader in the understanding of the meanings of poems.
