Rut

Abstract

El relato se sitúa en la época de los Jueces. Elimélej, Noemí y sus hijos parten de Belén a Moab a causa del hambre. Allí muere Elimélej y sus hijos se casan con dos moabitas, Orfá y Rut. Años más tarde también fallecen los hijos y Noemí decide retornar a su tierra. En el viaje de vuelta le acompaña Rut, quien se niega a abandonarla. Para poder subsistir Rut recoge las espigas que dejan caer los segadores en un campo, cuyo dueño es Boaz, quien la trata con benevolencia. A instancias de Rut, quien acude de noche a la era para pedir su protección, Boaz actúa como «rescatador» («goel») y se casa con ella. De este matrimonio nace Obed, el padre de Jesé y el abuelo del rey David. Noemí, que se había quedado sin hijos, se convierte así en la bisabuela del rey David. La historia de Rut no aparece representada en el arte paleocristiano, pero en la Edad Media experimentó un importante desarrollo iconográfico.

During the time of the Judges, Elimelech, Naomi and her children depart from Bethlehem to Moab because of a famine. There Elimelech dies and his sons marry two Moabites, Orpha and Ruth. Years later also the children die and Naomi decides to return to her land. On the return trip, Ruth, who refuses to leave Naomi, accompanies her. In order to survive, Ruth becomes a gleaner in a field, the owner of which is Boaz, who treats her kindly. At the urging of Naomi, Ruth goes to the field where Boaz sleeps in the middle of the night to ask for his protection. Boaz acts as a «rescuer» («goel») and marries her. From this marriage, Obed, father of Jesse and grandfather of King David, is born. Naomi, who had been left without children, became the greatgrandmother of King David. The iconographical representation of the book of Ruth does not appear in Early Christian Art but, during the Middle Ages, it developed on a grand scale.
