The intelligibility of Spanish regional accents in L2 English after tailored Lingua Franca Core instruction: a critical empirical analysis

Abstract

It is without question that English is spoken around the world by speakers for whom it is not their native language. These speakers inevitably have an accent which results from the transfer of not only their L1 but also the characteristics of their regional accent. This dissertation aims at analysing the extent to which L1 Spanish regional accent influences L2 English pronunciation and whether these differences are reflected in perceived intelligibility. The general hypotheses tested in this investigation are that (a) certain characteristics of L1 Spanish regional accent are transferred into L2 English pronunciation, (b) pronunciation instruction based on the Lingua Franca Core improves speaker intelligibility, and (c) speaker intelligibility can be predicted using quantitative methods.The widespread use of English has led to an increasing interest in the way non-native speakers (NNSs) of English interact with other English speakers, generally non-native. No hay duda de que el inglés se habla en todo el mundo por personas para quienes no es su lengua nativa. Estos hablantes tienen inevitablemente un acento que resulta de la transferencia, no sólo de su lengua nativa (L1) sino de las características de su acento regional. Esta tesis pretende analizar el grado de influencia de los acentos regionales españoles en la pronunciación del inglés como lengua extranjera (L2), así como estudiar si estas diferencias se reflejan en la inteligibilidad del hablante. Las hipótesis generales de esta investigación son: (a) ciertas características del acento regional español se transfieren a la pronunciación del inglés como L2, (b) la enseñanza de la pronunciación basada en el Lingua Franca Core mejora la inteligibilidad del hablante, y (c) la inteligibilidad se puede predecir usando métodos cuantitativos.El uso extendido del inglés ha suscitado un interés creciente en la manera en la que nos hablantes no nativos de inglés se relacionan con otros hablantes de inglés, generalmente no nativos.
