El exilio español en Nueva York : singularidades y perspectiva artística (1936-1975)

Abstract

Esta tesis doctoral aborda el exilio español en Nueva York desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar. La intención es esclarecer qué factores impactaron en la diáspora artística española condicionando la experiencia vital de los artistas y generando el contexto de su producción plástica. La investigación explora dos líneas paralelas que confluyen en dos objetivos: por un lado, presentar una visión que aborda la situación de la comunidad española en general y, más en particular, del mundo de la cultura durante este periodo de tiempo en Nueva York; por otro, configurar e integrar un corpus, mediante ejemplos representativos, que ofrece una perspectiva variada y contrastada de las diferentes formas de afrontar el reto migratorio en un núcleo de recepción de migrantes considerado como periférico dentro del conjunto del exilio republicano. La estructura del contenido, a fin de cumplir con los objetivos establecidos, se articula en cuatro partes a través de las que se abordan diversos aspectos del exilio español en Estados Unidos. La primera está dedicada a contextualizar y definir aquellos elementos clave que aparecen durante todo el trabajo, como lo son, la diplomacia cultural basada en la instalación de instituciones culturales y artísticas, la fluctuación de los estereotipos capaces de aproximar o alejar a comunidades o los asentamientos españoles en la ciudad antes de la Guerra Civil. A continuación, se presenta en tres partes cronológicas el resto de información, vehiculadas mediante ritmos migratorios. Este es un sistema de distribución capaz de ofrecer una perspectiva diáfana del fenómeno del exilio artístico que integra en la investigación elementos sociológicos, históricos, migratorios, legislativos y artísticos...This doctoral paper studies the Spanish exile in New York from an interdisciplinary perspective, in order to determine which factors impacted the Spanish artistic diaspora, conditioned their vital experience and the context of their plastic creations.The research explores two parallel lines, merging in two objectives; on the one hand, the articulation of a vision exploring the situation of the Spanish community in general, and the status of culture in particular during the New York period; on the other hand, a corpus is generated, by means of representative examples, offering a varied and contrasting perspective of the different approaches to the migration challenge, within a core of migrant reception considered peripheral to the republican exile group.The structure of the contents is fourfold, exploring several aspects of the Spanish exile in the United States, in order to reach the set objectives. The first part sets the context and definitions of the key elements analysed in the whole paper, such as cultural diplomacy based on the creation of cultural and artistic institutions, the fluctuation of stereotypes, able to bring together or drive apart communities or Spanish settlements established in the city before the Civil War.
