Abstract
Treatment of plagiarism among Spanish university students has been addressed so far by a few authors, as has also happened in other Spanish speaking countries. In contrast, in English language there are a lot of books and scholarly papers for many years. This difference for dealing with student plagiarism is reflected in the existing information on the subject available in academic institutions websites of different countries. This study explores the institutional position of universities in 20 countries through a sample of the top ten universities in each of the countries considered, according to the Ranking Web of World Universities developed by the Cybermetric Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior the Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. The findings show that in the English speaking countries and those where English is a second language widely used extensive information on plagiarism are available on universities websites. In Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, France and Italy, plagiarism information available on universities websites is scarce. These countries has much to learn from the North American universities and others English speaking countries.
