Las corrientes salafíes. Puritanismo religioso, proselitismo y militancia

Abstract

Las corrientes salafíes han ido adquiriendo una creciente influencia social en varios países musulmanes, lo que obliga a tomar en cuenta su posible papel en los procesos de cambio político en curso en una gran parte del mundo árabe. Existe el riesgo de contraponerlas de manera demasiado mecánica al islamismo más moderado, sin tener en cuenta la porosidad entre ambas tendencias. El salafismo se presenta como un paradigma casi perfecto de fundamentalismo suní, caracterizado por una interpretación literalista de los textos sagrados y una desconfianza intensa y explícita hacia la razón humana. Sus orígenes se remontan a los primeros siglos del islam, pero recibió un enorme impulso con el desarrollo del wahabismo en la península arábiga a partir del siglo xviii. Actualmente constituye una corriente extremadamente puritana y con una fuerte tendencia al repliegue sobre sí misma. Una parte del salafismo se ha inclinado hacia la violencia yihadista, pero otros sectores han logrado un relativo acomodo con la sociedad, al tiempo que otros han creado movimientos políticos que han recabado un notable éxito electoral, especialmente en Egipto. Está por ver si esta coexistencia con un mundo más secularizado y esta participación en el juego político pueden propiciar con el tiempo una mayor moderación en sus doctrinas y sus prácticas.

Salafi movements have become increasingly prominent and have shown a growing social influence in several Muslim countries. This fact obliges us to think about its potential role in the ongoing processes of political change which are taking place in much of the Arab world. There is a risk of setting them against moderate Islamism in a very mechanical way, without taking into account the porosity between both tendencies. Salafism is held up as a nearly perfect example of Sunni fundamentalism characterized by a literal interpretation of the sacred texts and an intense and explicit mistrust of the human reason. Its origins date back to the first centuries of Islam but it reached a milestone with the development of Wahabism in the Arabian Peninsula from the 18th century onwards. It constitutes today an extremely puritan movement with a strong inward-looking trend. Part of Salafi movement has shown inclination towards Jihadist violence whereas other sectors have achieved a comfortable position in society. Others have created political movements obtaining a remarkable electoral success, especially in Egypt. It remains to be seen whether the coexistence with a more secularised world and the participation in the political arena may favour greater moderation in their doctrines and practices over time.
