El asma es una enfermedad respiratoria crónica caracterizada por la inflamación persistente de las vías respiratorias, la producción excesiva de moco, la obstrucción reversible y variable del flujo de aire, una hiperreactividad no específica de las vías aéreas y cambios estructurales que resultan en la aparición de síntomas y signos característicos, como sibilancias, dificultad para respirar, opresión torácica y tos. El asma se reconoce como una afección de alta complejidad en la que intervienen distintas células del sistema inmunológico, así como mediadores de la inflamación.
