Abstract

Tradition and (R)evolution: Reframing Latina/o Identities in Contemporary US Culture identifies and celebrates the fluidity and multiplicity of the identity of Latinas / os as positive, as a challenge, often terrifying, but necessarily invigorating. Building our personal identity, recognizing what has built us, is what allows us to identify and get closer to what is similar to us, or feel intrigued by the differences in other personal identities. It is what makes us group together and build communal identities. The analysis of fiction texts, children's books, memoirs, poetry and movies found in this book is testimony to the importance of looking to the past, of remembering, of recognizing one's own heritage, but also of the obligation to look to the future, to re-imagine ourselves, and to reformulate our communities and their identities.
