La part de femmes: une lecture de la haute noblesse castillane au XVe siècle

Abstract

Cette thèse porte sur la question du gouvernement des femmes dans la Castille d’avant Isabellela Catholique, se penchant sur un groupe n’ayant fait l’objet d’aucune étude approfondie : celuide la haute noblesse féminine, et plus précisément les épouses des hauts dignitaires à la courdes rois Trastamare au XVe siècle. Formulant l’hypothèse de l’existence au sein de ce milieud’un ensemble de pratiques et de comportements communs, ce travail vise à analyser « la partdes femmes » dans les mécanismes d’union et de transmission familiales. Au-delà des fonctionsqui lui sont traditionnellement assignées telles que la médiation ou encore le mécénat religieuxet culturel, la femme noble transmet et gère des terres, actrice à part entière des changementspolitiques, sociaux et économiques de son temps. L’étude de ce groupe d’épouses constitue unobservatoire privilégié pour réévaluer le rôle de la femme noble, à la fois, à l’échelle de lasphère familiale, en proposant des éléments pouvant enrichir l’étude de la famille noblecastillane mais aussi à l’échelle de la Castille, à travers l’examen de leurs interactions avec lesacteurs du temps. En définitive, l’analyse s’emploie à livrer un autre portrait de la femme nobledans la Castille de la fin du Moyen Âge...

This dissertation is a study of the questions of power and feminine authority before queenIsabel, in a social group that so far has not been the object of any in-depth study: the femalehigh nobility, and more precisely, that of the wives of high dignitaries of the court of theTrastamare kings in the 15th century. The hypothesis is that a series of common practices andbehaviors existed within it, and this study analyzes “the women’s share” in the mechanisms ofunion and familial transmission. Beyond the functions that are traditionally assigned to her,such as mediation or cultural and religious patronage, the noble woman manages and passesdown her land, a full-fledged actor of the political, social and economic changes of her time.The study of this group of noble wives forms an expedient observatory from which to reevaluatethe role of the noble woman, both at the level of the familial sphere, by offering elements toenrich the study of the noble Castilian family, but also, at the level of Castile itself, through theexamination of their interaction with the actors of the time.
