Abstract
This chapter examines the process of literary and transmedial recycling of the giant figure in two seminal works of contemporary children’s literature: The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde and The BFG by Roald Dahl. From a comparative and intertextual perspective, the study explores how both narratives rework motifs, symbols, and structures derived from folktales and the European literary tradition, particularly in relation to figures such as the selfish giant, the ogre, and the redeemed monster. The chapter also analyses the connections between these works and their subsequent cinematic reinterpretations, paying particular attention to the processes of adaptation and resignification across different cultural and audiovisual contexts. The analysis highlights how narrative recycling preserves certain traditional elements while simultaneously transforming their aesthetic, moral, and symbolic meanings in response to new cultural sensibilities. Finally, the chapter reflects on the creative value of recycling in children’s and young adult literature as a mechanism of continuity, renewal, and dialogue between texts, historical periods, and modes of expression.
