Abstract
The general aim of this doctoral thesis is to establish a dialogue between early Buddhism and contemporary psychology, focusing on the ideas of compassion and love —and, by extension, mindfulness. Having introduced the subject and the problematic, and once the contemporary influence of the texts that make up early Buddhism on the way in of Buddhism in the West is pointed out, we proceed to the study of each tradition separately. The first part of the dissertation aims to study sati, a quality of early Buddhism which includes a specific use of attention and memory, and that is essential on the path to its ultimate goal, the liberation of dukkha. The inclusion of sati in the study is due to its intimate and essential relationship to the core ideas in which we are interested, love and compassion. The second part focuses on the study of mettā, loving-kindness. Mettā appears as an essential factor in the path leading to the end of dukkha, the Noble Eightfold Path, and its relationship with karuṇā (compassion) and sati is intense, close and essential...
