La fecunda etapa docente, investigadora y social de Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco en el Instituto de Córdoba, entre 1899 y 1910

Abstract

En este trabajo se estudia, de forma conjunta, la vida y la obra de Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco, durante el periodo 1899-1910 en que fue Catedrático del Instituto de Córdoba. En primer lugar se enmarca su figura en el contexto histórico español de la época y, a continuación, se analizan sus estudios universitarios, el despertar de su vocación geológica y el desarrollo de la oposición en la que obtuvo, por unanimidad, la Cátedra de Historia Natural y Fisiología e Higiene del Instituto general y técnico de Córdoba. Se expone y comenta la modernización y el impulso que imprimió a la actividad docente del Instituto, con la puesta en marcha de las clases prácticas en las asignaturas físico-naturales, impartiéndolas tanto en el laboratorio como en plena naturaleza. También es de destacar la labor de E. H-Pacheco como colector de objetos naturales de la provincia, objetos que enviaba al Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales y con cuyos duplicados aumentó la importante colección del Gabinete de Historia Natural del Instituto. Se pone de manifiesto la meritoria labor desarrollada como Secretario y Bibliotecario del Instituto, durante varios años, y su intensa labor social para lo que funda la Extensión de Enseñanza del Instituto, cuyo fin era instruir a las clases obreras de Córdoba. Así como su participación en el gobierno de la ciudad a través de su puesto como Concejal del Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Córdoba, durante una legislatura, siendo una de sus mayores preocupaciones desde el consistorio la defensa de las clases mas desfavorecidas y facilitarles su instrucción. En último lugar se analizan y comentan los trabajos científicos y de divulgación que publicó E. H-Pacheco durante este periodo, sus hallazgos geológicos más relevantes y se hacen públicos, por primera vez, un conjunto de manuscritos suyos con datos geológicos inéditos de la provincia de Córdoba.

This paper studies, as a whole, the life and work of Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco, during the period of 1899-1910, when he was the science teacher at Córdoba High School. First, it frames his figure in Spain’s historical time, and it continues analyzing his university education, the awaken of his geological vocation and the progress of his tenure examination, which he won by unanimity, the professor position of Natural History and Physiology and Hygiene of the Córdoba general and technical high school. It exposes and discusses the modernization and the urge that he impressed onto the educational activity of his high school, with the outset of the practical classes in the areas of physical and natural sciences, teaching them in the laboratory as well as in the countryside. The role of E. H-Pacheco is also remarkable as a collector of natural objects of the province, objects that he sent to the Museum of Natural Science and with whose duplicates he increased the important collection of the Cabinet of Natural Science of his high school. It shows the meritorious task developed as a Secretary and Librarian of the high school, during several years, and his intense social work, which led him to the foundation of the Extended Education of the high school, whose goal was to educate the working class of Córdoba. As well as his participation in the city governments as a councilman of Córdoba City Hall, during one legislature, being one of his major concerns the defense of the disadvantaged and making education accessible to them. Lastly, it analyzes and comments his scientific and outreach works published during this period, his more relevant geological findings and, for the first time, a set of his manuscripts with unpublished geological data from the province of Córdoba, are made public.
