Brutos de granito. El toro vettón de Villanueva del Campillo y los verracos del Valle Amblés (Ávila)

Abstract

Se ofrecen unas consideraciones generales sobre el estudio de los famosos verracos vettones, esculturas en granito de toros y cerdos de la Segunda Edad del Hierro en las tierras de la Meseta Occidental. Seguidamente se analiza la situación de las esculturas en el Valle Amblés (Ávila), el área con mayor concentración de verracos de todo el territorio vettón. Nos centramos a continuación en las dos esculturas halladas en Villanueva del Campillo, un gran toro y un cerdo. El primero, monumental, es de grandes dimensiones y la escultura de mayor tamaño de la Europa céltica. Se analiza el contexto del hallazgo, las características del gran bóvido y sus posibles interpretaciones y significado, priorizando la idea de marcadores de pastos de calidad por las élites vettonas. Se reflexiona también sobre la pequeña historia del traslado de las esculturas de su emplazamiento original a la plaza del pueblo cercano.

Some general considerations are offered on the study of the famous Vetton boars, granite sculptures of bulls and pigs, from the Late Iron Age in the lands of the Western Spanish Plateau. Then is analyzed the situation of the sculptures in the Amblés Valley (Ávila), the area with the highest concentration of boars in the entire Vetton territory. We next concentrate on the two sculptures found in Villanueva del Campillo, a large bull and a pig. The former is monumental, of great dimensions and the largest sculpture in Celtic Europe. The context of the discovery, the characteristics of the huge bull and its possible interpretations and meaning are analyzed. Prioritizing the idea of quality pasture markers by the Vetton elites. It also reflects on the story of the sculptures’ transfer from their original location to the nearby village square.
