El cáncer de mama es el tumor más frecuente en la mujer a nivel nacional y mundial, siendo el causante de más de 6,000 muertes al año en España. El cáncer de mama es una enfermedad heterogénea y su clasificación y tratamiento se realiza según sus principales factores inmunohistoquímicos los que definen los fenotipos luminales, HER2-positivo y triple negativo. En el año 2000, Perou y colaboradores definieron por primera vez los subtipos intrínsecos basados en perfiles de expresión génica, lo que posteriormente concluyó en el desarrollo del algoritmo PAM50 basado en 50 genes para definir los 5 subtipos intrínsecos conocidos (luminal A, luminal B, HER2-enriched, basal-like y normal-like).
