Abstract
La escritura jeroglífica maya es un sistema glotográfico plenamente desarrollado que codifica un idioma maya conocido como cholano clásico. Además de poder ser estudiada desde la lingüística, la alta iconicidad de sus signos permite analizarla desde una perspectiva visual. La presente investigación es un estudio interdisciplinar sobre los signos jeroglíficos mayas desde una perspectiva visual, de manera que combina ciencias afines como la paleografía, la epigrafía, la arqueología, la antropología, la historia, la historia del arte, la iconografía, la lingüística, la semiótica, los estudios visuales y la retórica. El objetivo principal es conocerlas características visuales de dicho sistema de escritura que sobrepasan los aspectos lingüísticos para comprender qué papel desempeñaban los signos jeroglíficos en la cultura visual maya.
Maya hieroglyphic writing is a fully developed glottographic system that encodes a Mayan language known as Classic Cholan. In addition to being studied from a linguistic perspective, the high iconicity of its signs allows it to be analysed from a visual perspective. The present research is an interdisciplinary study of Maya hieroglyphic signs from a visual perspective, combining related sciences such as palaeography, epigraphy, archaeology, anthropology, history, art history, iconography, linguistics, semiotics, visual studies and rhetoric.
