Las estampas josefinas en los impresos mexicanos y poblanos del siglo XVIII.

Abstract

El culto y devoción por san José caló profundamente en la sociedad novohispana desde los albores de la colonización, de la mano de los frailes franciscanos. Este fervor por el padre terrenal de Cristo va a tener su reflejo en las distintas manifestaciones artísticas y muy especialmente en las estampas. En el siglo XVIII la presencia de san José fue muy común en las ilustraciones que acompañan los libros e impresos realizados en las imprentas mexicanas y poblanas. En estas representaciones se van a plasmar las ideas expresadas por los místicos y por los tratadistas del arte, en torno a la figura de san José que se aparta del anciano desapegado del Niño, para mostrarse como un padre joven y amoroso.

The cult and devotion for St. Joseph took a deep stance in the New Spain society from the dawn of colonization, by the Franciscan monks. This enthusiasm for the father of Christ in the earth will have its reflection in the different artistic manifestations and especially in the engravings. In the eighteenth century the presence of St. Joseph was very common in the illustrations that accompany the books and printed in the Mexican´s and Poblana´s printing houses. In these representations the ideas expressed by the mystics and by the art writers will be expressed, around the figure of Saint Joseph who turns away from the old man detached from the Child, to show himself as a young and loving father.
