Abstract
The Almonte Marismas aquifer system is a key element for the water support of the ecosystems that are located on it, comprising the territory of the Doñana ’s National Park and its surroundings in Andalusia, Spain. This national park, as well as a World Heritage Site, has seen its fragile balance affected due to anthropic pressures, linked to the overexploitation of groundwater and the consequent decrease in piezometric levels. In this context, the Guadalquivir River Basin Authority employs a State Index ( Ie ) that synthesizes the condi tion of the aquifer system H owever, there are uncertainties about its effectiveness, so this work compares the Ie with the index used in France (IPS) and the method of evaluation of tendencies made by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demogra phic Challenge of Spain The comparative assessment demonstra tes the validity of the Ie , while finding some opportunities for improvement for this index to represent better the state of the aquifer that feeds this important socioecological system .
