Abstract
ABSTRACT: This work analyzes the figure of the merchant in the «manuales de confesores». It is a complex problem and difficult to present. Firstly, because of the theoretical disquisitions that in several of these books precede the specific enunciation of the sins related to the profession and its corresponding activities. Secondly, due to the ubiquity of the reflections on both aspects in the different products within the genre, reflections that sometimes arise when dealing with the sixth commandment while others have a separate particular treatment. Thirdly, due to the relevant differences among the different authors, ranging from individual ethics to the social implications of commercial activity. All this makes it possible to design a certain professional deontology of the merchant in the Modern Age, the violation of such a deontology is often well illustrated by Golden Age satirical literature and drama.
