Abstract
It is argued that verification is the essence of journalism and that the media made a mistake in renouncing it. They initially considered that the hoaxes circulating on the Web were not their own business. They started to pay attention to fact-checking of politicians' statements but were slower to react to disinforming digital content with no known author, despite the fact that these lies were potentially more numerous and widespread.
