Abstract
This research work investigates the social and cultural nature of our material and symbolic interactions with other animals. On the one hand, it shows how the ways in which humans imagine, perceive and categorize other animals, condition the ways in which we interact with them in a material dimension. On the other hand, it suggests that these material interactions reach a performative character, which impacts the narratives and imaginaries about non-human animals. Thinking about this dialogic relationship between the material and the symbolic, as a process in continuous transformation, also implies thinking about our responsibility as moral agents, to guide our interactions towards more compassionate and fair ways. Furthermore, it places these interactions in the domain of a engagement anthropology, capable of challenging the dominant narratives, to propose new meanings and new ways of relating to other animals, more just and compassionate. So, in this work, it is not only intended to expand the presence of non-human animals in anthropological literature, as social and cultural agents, but, above all, to do so through approaches that must be capable of advancing in their consideration as members of our moral community.
