Prácticamente desde su génesis, la fotografía mantuvo una estrecha relación con la ciencia y el patrimonio cultural. Su condición de automatismo dotaba a la fotografía de una presunta objetividad y la proponía como solución al problema de la temida subjetividad introducida por la mano del artista en sus dibujos y esquemas. El catálogo o el inventario fueron propuestos de forma temprana como eje fundamental de las tareas de preservación del patrimonio cultural, y la fotografía herramienta indisociable a tal tarea. La democratización de lo digital a lo largo de la última década del S. XX, el desarrollo de Internet y la imagen digital, fueron vistos como una ambiciosa solución para garantizar el acceso universal a la cultura, y con ello, a comienzos del S. Since it was born, photography has maintained a close relationship with science and cultural heritage.
