Abstract
This doctoral thesis examines tourism in the Colombian-Ecuadorian Andean border region in depth, seeking to contribute to theoretical knowledge about border tourism. Despite the lack of academic attention to this region, the study is distinguished by focusing on cultural geography perspectives, heritage development, the construction of tourist destinations in border regions, and cultural tourism perspectives, categorized as innovative proposals for the linking of tourism and borders. The work comprises two fundamental analyses: the use of the theory of the cross-border cultural landscape and the understanding of tourism social practices to generate the border space. The interpretation of the cultural landscape involves the construction of three cross-border landscapes: ancestral, colonial, and republican. These landscapes, although they emerged at different historical moments, intertwine and overlap, forming a unique and complex cultural identity in this border region, a hybrid territory that accommodates identities, historical feats, nationalisms, forms of resistance, and valuable cultural heritage...
