Abstract
El uso de las técnicas de imagen ha ganado especial importancia en el diagnóstico y monitorización de la arteritis de células gigantes (ACG) en las últimas décadas. En concreto, se recomienda el uso de la ecografía como la primera prueba de imagen a realizar en pacientes con sospecha de ACG y, dada su importancia en el diagnóstico, ha sido recientemente incluida en los nuevos criterios de clasificación de ACG del Colegio Americano de Reumatología (ACR) y la Liga Europea de Enfermedades Reumáticas (EULAR) del 2022. Su uso se ha extendido en práctica clínica, siendo fundamental en las consultas de diagnóstico rápido de ACG. Dada su relevancia y uso creciente, ha desplazado a la biopsia de la arteria temporal en el diagnóstico, una técnica invasiva y con elevada tasa de falsos negativos. The use of imaging techniques has gained special importance in the diagnosis and monitoring of giant cell arteritis (GCA) in recent decades. Specifically, ultrasound is recommended as the first imaging test to be performed in patients with suspected GCA. Given its importance in diagnosis, it has recently been included in the new 2022 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) GCA classification criteria. Its use has become widespread in clinical practice and is essential in fast-track clinics for GCA diagnosis. Due to its growingrelevance, ultrasound has replaced temporal artery biopsy for diagnosis, a more invasive technique with a high false-negative rate. Despite the expanding use of imaging techniques in GCA management, many questions remain regarding how to optimize their use in clinical prac5ce, both for diagnosis and for monitoring and predicting long-termdisease outcomes...
