Abstract
Orotracheal intubation is a widely used and safe technique in Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Medical Emergencies, but the inability to detect well in advance a potential difficult airway can lead to serious adverse events for the patient, including death. There are a series of external predictors of endotracheal intubation (modified Mallampati test, thyromental distance, mouth opening, upper lip bite test) described in the literature with abundant bibliography that yields highly variable and heterogeneous results. The objective of this study is to compile a database of 198 patients from Clínico San Carlos Hospital area who meet the inclusion criteria, evaluating in them the mentioned external predictors, as well as other variables considered of interest, and to analyze their statistical relationship with the Cormack-Lehane degree of visualization of the glottis (considering it as a guide for the ease or difficulty of intubation); all this in order to elaborate some actual recommendations on which external predictors shall be used, how, when and in which combination...
