Abstract
O presente artigo visa a discutir a intertextualidade entre Memorial de Aires, último romance do escritor brasileiro Machado de Assis, publicado em 1908, e a tragédia Romeu e Julieta, de William Shakespeare, primeiramente publicada em 1599. É nosso objetivo discutir a presença do drama shakespeariano no referido romance à luz da problemática que envolve o trágico. Acreditamos que a recuperação da tragédia é realizada de maneira irônica pelo escritor carioca, que, ao manipular o enredo, subverte alguns elementos essenciais para a composição do trágico, o que resulta no retrato de um interessante contexto social, cultural e estético.
This article aims to discuss the intertextuality between Memorial de Aires, the Brazilian writer Machado de Assis’ last book, published in 1908, and the tragedy Romeo e Juliet, by William Shakespeare, first published in 1599. It is our aim to discuss the presence of the Shakespearean drama in the referred novel by the problems that involve the tragic. We believe that the recuperation of the tragedy is made in an ironic way by the Carioca writer who, by anipulating the plot, subverts some essential elements to the composition of the tragic, which results in a portrait of an interesting social, cultural and aesthetic context.
