Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze in-depth the measurement of efficiency in innovative activity, under a multidimensional and evolutionary approach to European national innovation systems for the period 2016-2023. Through the detailed analysis of a set of indicators and methodologies used in the construction of synthetic indices, an alternative, more reliable, and robust index is proposed to study the behavior of European National Innovation Systems (NIS).For this purpose, the thesis is structured as follows:Firstly, a comprehensive evaluation of the indicators comprising the Summary Innovation Index (SII) is conducted, including statistical calculations and methods studying the guidelines and properties that a composite indicator, in this case used to rank the innovation of EU member countries, should follow. Alternatives for the sub-indicators of the SII are also explored in numerous databases such as Eurostat, CIS, IOI, etc., involving the elimination of certain variables and their regrouping into dimensions to construct an improved alternative index, SII2. Subsequently, the properties of SII2 are analyzed through a sensitivity and reliability study, following the guidelines of the OECD's "Handbook on Constructing Composite Indicators" (2008) with the aim of obtaining a more robust index...
