Abstract

This collective volume is a result of the activities implemented by the former IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion Network) Standing Committee on Migrant Families, Children and Youth, between 2014 and 2019. The publication starts with the idea that “migration is fundamentally a family affair”, although specific research did not emerge until the 1980s. The authors are aware of the urgent need for migration literature on the topic. In the introduction dedicated to “Family practices in migration: everyday lives and relationships”, Montero-Sieburth and Mas Giralt explain the premises for this book. The authors have made some basic theoretical choices to establish a common ground for their work. First, they decided to work on “migrant family” instead of “transnational family” to articulate local and transnational family practices in different receiving and sending contexts. Second, they focused on child- and youth-centred perspectives, to avoid a traditional adult-centred perspective on family structures. They also considered the social dynamics between family and non-family members. The aim of this publication is to highlight the influence of “doing family” on the migration trajectories and im/mobilities of family members.

Este volumen colectivo es el resultado de las actividades realizadas por el antiguo Comité Permanente sobre Familias, Niños, Niñas y Jóvenes Migrantes de IMISCOE (Red Internacional de Migración, Integración y Cohesión Social), entre 2014 y 2019. La publicación parte de la idea de que “la migración es fundamentalmente un asunto de familia”, aunque la investigación específica no surgió hasta la década de 1980. Los autores son conscientes de la necesidad urgente de aportaciones sobre el tema desde el estudio de las migraciones. En la introducción dedicada a “Prácticas familiares en procesos migratorios: relaciones y vida cotidiana”, Montero-Sieburth y Mas Giralt explican las premisas de este libro. Los autores tomaron algunas decisiones básicas en el campo teórico para establecer así un terreno común para su trabajo. Primero, decidieron trabajar sobre la “familia migrante” en lugar de la “familia transnacional” para articular prácticas familiares locales y transnacionales en diferentes contextos de recepción y origen. En segundo lugar, se centraron en perspectivas dedicadas a niños y jóvenes, para evitar un enfoque tradicional centrado en adultos para analizar las estructuras familiares. También consideraron la dinámica social entre familiares y no familiares. El objetivo de esta publicación es resaltar la influencia del “hacer familia” en las trayectorias migratorias e in/movilidades de los miembros de la familia.
